Kinja'd!!!

I’m going to Talladega on Saturday or Sunday. I received garage and pit passes from a friend.

I’m not a NASCAR fan, I know nothing about it, and I don’t know what to expect. I’m going because I’ve been told by people that it’s an experience worth checking out at least once.

We will be going over on Saturday or Sunday, but not both days. We can either do the truck races on Saturday or the big race on Sunday.

Any tips from NASCAR opponauts? Should I do Saturday, or Sunday? I’ve heard the truck races can be more fun.

Except race cars, & don’t forget to tell Dale Jr. fans how bad he is doing.

Insult Jesus and wear a shirt that is the Confederate flag in rainbow colors, they’ll love that. Also be a beer snob.

I’ve been twice and I am a declared F1, sportscar, WRC fan. Check the weather and go the day most likely to see racing. If it is good both days go Sunday for the big race.

In the pits things will likely be pretty chill. If you go deeper into the infield things will get crazier. Take in the pomp and circumstance of the start. When things start find a place where you can get a good view of the pack. Closer the better. On restarts listen to the pack wind up over a couple of laps. It is an interesting sound. Take a race scanner if you can to listen to the drivers.

Thanks for the tips. We’realmost definitely doing Sunday now. Hopefully it’s as interesting as I’ve been told it can be.

I’ve never been to Talladega, but I’ve been to NASCAR about 15 races at several different tracks and will give you an idea what to expect based on that.

Definitely get a scanner. It’s a big track so using it to listen to the race broadcast can be nice. At least till close to the end of the race don’t bother with listening to the radio for the front runners. Until they’re close enough to the end to talk strategy the guys in front won’t have a lot to say. Pick a big name that’s mid-pack or further back and you’ll hear more. After incidents the officers channels can get interesting as well.

There will be drunks LOTS of drunks, but I have never seen a single issue at the tracks I’ve been to.

If you haven’t already the official rules for what you can and can’t bring in. Generally there are few restrictions as far as food which is great.

If it’s not sunny enough to wear sunglasses I recommend clear safety glasses. It’s not uncommon to have chunks of rubber flown from the track. After my last race an Bristol I left looking like I had a 5 o’clock shadow from bits of rubber and other debris.

The infield is going to be one big party. It’ll be an even bigger party during the truck race since most won’t be watching as closely. Take advantage and you might meet a nice person with a rooftop viewing platform on an rv or bus you can watch a few laps from. Also, don’t be surprised if you’re offered moonshine. I have been at every race I’ve been to and almost always by someone in law enforcement.

With pit passes you might get the chance at some cool souvenirs. I’ve gotten a couple lug nuts and my cousin has a section of door off a car that wrecked.

Ok, that should be more info than you were really looking for.

I use these when we go to NHRA events for both the hearing protection and the ability to listen to the race broadcast (most tracks have a race broadcast on an FM station).
